A collector’s item resulting from the inventiveness of designer Antonio Erario, the 4C IFD bicycle is the perfect mix of design, light-weight and innovation and doesn’t fail to go unnoticed.
The synergy between the Alfa Romeo Style Centre and Compagnia Ducale came together to coin a new term, IFD (Innovative Frame Design), to give the right emphasis to the intense research that went into making the frame as light as possible. The name encapsulates the technology and novelty at the core of the project, a world premiere carbon fibre semi-tube section, the same as the frame of Alfa Romeo 4C.
The profile flows towards the junction points formed of the handlebars, chainset and saddle. These create a structural link with the frame, connected with steel tie-rods that bring out its technological construction. Erario’s solution breaks with class bike design, freed from the usual restrictive archetypes, in the way only somebody who has never designed a bike before could: 990 grams of technological prowess in the frame, totalling just under 7 kilograms for the light version and 9 for the heavier version.
Indeed it is the shape of the frame, with its dynamic and fluid lines, that is the focus point of the bike’s refined style, inspired by the 4C sports car whose shape forms a stylised 4 that stands out when hung from the handlebars. Attention to detail inspired the designer to hide the brakes behind the crank gear and emphasise the Alfa Romeo logo, inserted at different points so it can be seen from every angle.
The 4C IFD is the perfect combination of passion and future. Inciting powerful emotions from a first glance, in its most intimate folds it reveals a depth only a selective few have the knowledge to appreciate. A true icon, it oozes style, wearing the clothes of trendsetters in technological innovation.
Tailored by Compagnia Ducale, each bicycle is entirely made by hand in Italy. The pieces produced are exclusive limited editions and requests are received from around the world.
While the BBC crowned it among the ten best designs of 2014 related to the automobile world, the ADI – Association for Industrial Design – selected it among the best one hundred design objects, exhibiting it in Rome to represent the excellence of Italian style.
