Astronomia Tourbillon Clarity Octopus, a truly unique design by Jacob & Co

Category:

Renowned for its creative, revolutionary timepieces, Jacob & Co. has always stood out from the crowd for the customized mechanisms and lines of its innovative, often extravagant designs.
For a watchmaking house, the brand is relatively young: it has only been around for 16 years, but all its projects have already proven to be bound to stand the test of time.
One of Jacob & Co.’s most recent creations is the Astronomia Tourbillon Clarity Octopus, a truly unique design that real connoisseurs will appreciate and love.

This watch features a hand-crafted pink gold case, which holds up several viewing windows and the main domed crystal. Each clear part of the watch is made of sapphire, and all are coated with anti-reflective material. This watch is bigger than an average watch, coming in at 50mm in diameter and 25mm of thickness. It also has no visible crown, and almost looks like the mechanism is suspended within sapphire alone. This revolutionary design provides a pretty cool aesthetic effect that draws one’s attention to the amazing interior of the watch.

The Dial, Hands, and Mechanism
The first thing you will notice when you look at the watch is the 3D octopus suspended within. It has tentacles that stretch all across the entire watch, and has a cool custom design. This is the main focal piece of the watch, and has been hand-engraved and lacquered. The octopus features a diamond that emerges from the right side. This round diamond rotates every 60 seconds on two axes. Plus, it is a Jacob cut – which means 288 sparkling facets. It really sticks out, and weighs about one carat.
Because this watch is in the Astronomia line, it also features planetary movements. The Earth is a globe that also rotates every 60 seconds on both vertical and horizontal axes. It is lacquered with magnesium and is located directly to the left of the time dial. The time dial makes use of four roman numeral markers, and has an hour and a minute hand. They have both been coated with a nice blue color that both stands out from the octopus and provides easy readability.

All of these moving parts require a significant amount of energy to maintain. This watch makes use of a revolutionary triple-axis tourbillon mechanism as well, which only increases the energy needed. Jacob & Co. managed to pull it off – the watch has a 60-hour power reserve, which means less winding and more admiring. Another plus to this watch is that you can see the mechanism in action. Simply flip it over, and there is a sapphire crystal caseback so that you can observe all of the gears in motion
