The soul of Mexico City.
Amid towering skyscrapers and bustling streets, Mexico City pulsates with an irresistible energy, drawing visitors into its embrace. North America’s most populous city, with nearly 9 million residents, has something for everyone. But it’s the diverse neighborhoods that truly define Mexico City’s allure. Wander through gritty streets where street art graces every corner, or lose yourself in the boho charm of artsy districts. And then there are the enclaves that exude a Beverly Hills-like glamour, with upscale boutiques and trendy cafés lining the streets.
Mexico City may be a whirlwind of activity with a symphony of sights and sounds that can overwhelm the senses, but in its vibrant chaos lies a beauty and charm that is truly unforgettable. Let’s embark on a journey through some of these hidden gems, each promising a glimpse into the soul of Mexico City. We start with a deep dive into the Polanco area, where quiet luxury reigns.
Casa Polanco
Stepping into Casa Polanco is akin to entering a private sanctuary in the midst of a bustling city. This boutique hotel, housed within a beautifully restored mansion, oozes elegance and charm. With its meticulously curated décor, lush courtyard garden, and tranquil ambiance, Casa Polanco offers a serene retreat for anyone seeking a taste of old-world glamour.
On a hot day, don’t miss the free fruit popsicles offered every afternoon in the lush grounds. Let Roberto the concierge offer insights on architectural highlights (his passion), shopping for a piece of hand-crafted jewelry from world famous Tane, or the best restaurant in town. Small terraces dot the entire property, where you can have an intimate drink with friends overlooking the verdant Lincoln Park.
Wild Oscar
Nestled in upscale Polanco, Wild Oscar beckons with its contemporary design and intimate atmosphere. The hotel’s sleek interiors, adorned with vibrant artwork and chic furnishings, exude a sense of urban sophistication. A curated collection of artworks add a residential feel; black windowpane glass doors in the rooms offer a Japanese-inspired vibe and the private balconies offer a soothing flash of green.
The service is hyper-personalized and amenities are abundant: think handmade chocolate bark, a stocked (and free) minibar and welcome drink wherever you choose to have it, on your terrace, at the bar or on the rooftop with 360° city views. A meal at restaurant Constance is a treat at nearly any hour, and digital nomads will appreciate the desk, plenty of plug sockets and fast Wi-Fi 24/7, too.
Pug Seal Anatole
For those seeking the white and ecru aesthetic, Pug Seal Anatole is something else. With few visuals outside, a peep inside offers a wild pop of color to awaken the spirit. Situated in the heart of Polanco’s leafy boulevards, this mansion, now a boutique hotel exudes art from every pore. Original pieces are everywhere, from the public spaces to the individually-decorated rooms.
A relaxing conservatory overlooks a green courtyard where small events are often organized for guests. The rooms are an eclectic mix of furniture from the 1900’s with bathrooms featuring resin floors and walls. If you are lucky, you can score a room with its own hammock on the terrace. Staying at Pug Seal Anatole offers a sanctuary of serenity and immersion into art amid the hustle and bustle of Mexico City.
La Valise
In the bohemian Roma district, La Valise started out as a luxury boutique hotel in a mansion with just three rooms. After an adjoining building was added, it now has 8 rooms and is a true labor of love by French owner Yves Naman who calls this city home.
Each room is a work of art in itself, and the opening of every door sparks wonder – one room has a giant moon as a room divider, another two have beds on tracks that slide out on the balcony; others have fully outdoor bathtubs and showers (in addition to the indoor ones). The beds are heaven on earth where I enjoyed a truly restorative sleep. Breakfast is an abundant continental affair, served in your room, which you will have trouble leaving. But go out you must, because Roma has so much to offer, from mercados to museums, from arty boutiques, to fascinating architecture.
Experiencing Mexico City’s epicurian delights
CDMX, as it’s commonly known, has garnered a reputation for its astonishing gastro scene. Case in point: Chef Pepe Salinas of Balcón del Zócalo offers a tasting menu that is an astounding culinary journey through the country’s rich gastronomic heritage. Every dish is a work of art, and the view of the vast plaza below is breathtaking. The wine list offers noteworthy Mexican vintages for the perfect pairing. In Roma, at the casual-chic Campobaja you can get your fill of seafood which is at its best when sharing plate after plate: the raw mahi-mahi was outstanding. Enjoy it all with a Mexican beer or a nice Margarita.
After sundown, sip on expertly crafted cocktails in the eclectic ambiance of Mexico City’s nightlife scene. Unwind at one of the city’s trendy bars, such as Licorería Limantour in Roma or the clandestine Handshake Speakeasy, who was just crowned as the number one cocktail bar of North America.
Top it all off-over the pyramids
For a bird’s-eye view of Mexico’s ancient wonders, take a hot air balloon ride over the majestic pyramids of Teotihuacán, just 50 kilometers northeast of the city. Outfits like Volare can take adventurers up and over the archaeological site at dawn, for a thrilling hour-long ride with unforgettable views. My visit to Mexico City was everything I had hoped for and more: from the colorful riot of sky-high balloons to the murals of Diego Rivera, from the imaginative takes on food and drink to the warmth and kindness of the people, every step you take brings you closer to the true sabor of the Mexican soul.
